CASINO IN MISSISSAUGA?  On May 17, 2012, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) released a report indicating that two (2) sites in Mississauga are being considered for the location of a possible casino: the Waterfront and the Malton area.

INSPIRATION PORT CREDIT:  Gary Kent, the City's Director of City Strategy and Innovation made an eagerly-awaited announcement at the THREE VILLAGES meeting on May 7, 2012 regarding the 'Inspiration Port Credit' initiative, which was approved at Council on Wed. May 9.  This will be a public process to master plan the massive Marina lands and Imperial Oil lands (shown left) on the Port Credit waterfront.  Further details pending.

NOTE:  Canada Lands Company begins its own public consultations concerning the Harbour Marina Lands on Tues. May 29 (see below).

STREETSCAPE - RESIDENTIAL FRONT GARDEN CONTEST:  Entry period is May 14 - June 15 and judging begins on June 24.  4th year.  The residential contest has four classes: Traditional Large, Small and Townhouse Gardens, plus Alternative Gardens (new) which includes ecogardens, native plant gardens, fusion gardens, cottage gardens and edible gardens.  There is also a contest for small businesses.  Prizes awarded!  Brochure/entry form at community centres, libraries and local garden centres.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE TREE PERMIT BY-LAW: 
Wednesday, May 23 @ 2 – 5 p.m. & 6:30 – 9 p.m.
at PORT CREDIT ARENA (Credit Room), 40 Stavebank Road (map). 

The Corporate Report: Proposed Amendments to Tree Permit By-Law 474-05 (25p PDF) was presented to Council (GC) on February 29, 2012.  Proposed changes to the By-Law are designed to better protect large individual trees, increase fines and include a replanting program.

MIRANET ROUNDTABLE ON CELL TOWERS & THE CITY'S INTERIM PROTOCOL:  Thursday, May 24 @ 7-9 p.m. with Mississauga-area politicians, telecom industry reps, City and Industry Canada staff and RA reps in order to address the land use planning (siting) and aesthetic issues.

RIVERSIDE PUBLIC SCHOOL - FRANTIC FUN FAIR:  Friday, May 25 @ 5-9 p.m.
at 30 John Street North (map).  FREE. 

The Frantic Fun Fair features midway games, raffles, bouncy castles, garden tea room and plant sale, baked goods, dance performances and live music.  Proceeds go to upgrading learning tools and equipment for Riverside Public School.

CARASSAUGA FESTIVAL OF CULTURES:  Weekend of May 25, 26, 27.  Mississauga's 27th annual event.  Join in the celebration and experience the tastes and sounds of more than 64 countries at the largest multicultural festival in Ontario.

BIKE 4 BETTY CHARITY RIDE:  Sunday, May 27 @ 7:00 - 10:30 a.m. (registration).  5th Annual event.  All proceeds go to Trillium Health Centre's cancer program.  This non-competitive bike ride will start and finish at PORT CREDIT MEMORIAL PARK (map), sticking closely to the Waterfront Trail bike path. 
Choose a distance that is right for you:  2k, 15k, 30k, 75k or 100k.

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES:  Sunday, May 27 @ 1 - 4 p.m. in CLARKSON.  'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes.  The mission for this walk is to create a unique and powerful public experience that educates individuals and communities about the causes of sexualized violence, provides them with prevention and remediation strategies and empowers them to further develop and implement the knowledge and skills interpersonally and politically.  This event is organized by Armagh House as a fundraiser.  Armagh is a non-profit second-stage housing program which offers a safe, supportive environment for abused women with or without children.  Armagh has been serving women and children who have left abusive homes, within all of Peel Region, for almost 20 years.  The event will begin at Southdown and Lakeshore / Clarkson Crossing and head Eastbound on Lakeshore to Meadow Wood, then go South on Meadow Wood to Armagh at 927 Meadow Wood.  Specially-sized shoes are ordered from a supplier in the USA.  Refer to the official web site: http://www.walkamileinhershoes.org and the Clarkson event subsite

CANCER SOCIETY - SPRING GARDEN TOUR:  Sunday, May 27 @ 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the LORNE PARK neighbourhood of Mississauga.  7th annual event.  All proceeds donated to the Canadian Cancer Society Tickets available NOW

Marjorie Harris, author & gardening columnist for the Globe & Mail, will enlighten garden tour visitors at one of our lovely garden locations.  As well, to further enhance our visitors’ experience, local musicians will perform instrumental music in some of the gardens throughout the day.

BREUCKNER RHODODENDRON GARDENS - TOUR:  Sunday, May 27 @ 2 - 4 p.m.  Enter at 660 Lakeshore Road West (map).  Rain or shine.  FREE.

Port Credit is home to Mississauga's first public 'City Garden', located on the west side of Godfrey's Lane (map).  Take this annual garden tour with Para Kanp, head gardener, and enjoy Mississauga's only designated public garden at the peak of the rhododendron blooming season.

BIKE TO WORK DAY:  Monday, May 28 @ 7 - 10 a.m.  
In conjunction with Smart Commute Mississauga and the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC), the City of Mississauga will be hosting a free breakfast event on Bike to Work Day to encourage area residents and employees to try cycling to work.  6th Annual event.

BREAKFAST EVENT from 8 - 10 a.m. at: Mississauga Celebration Square:
300 City Centre Drive
(map).  Group rides to the MCS begin at 7:00 a.m.

The event includes bike safety check-ups, fun prizes, cycling vendors, a BMX demonstration and much more!  Leave your vehicles at home on May 28 and live green, one bike ride at a time.

PORT CREDIT HARBOUR MARINA LANDS - MASTER PLAN: 
In December 2011, representatives of 3 local residents’ associations and other groups in Port Credit met with facilitators from the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) retained by Canada Lands Company (CLC).  The purpose of the series of small meetings was to solicit residents' thoughts and opinions regarding a process for the development of a master plan for CLC's site at 1 Port Street East (map).

The property includes an approximately 51 acre (20.6 hectare) waterlot (including the sunken Ridgetown)) and 17 acres (6.8 hectares) of tableland on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Credit River. 

PUBLIC MEETING:  CLC plans to proceed with three (3) public meetings regarding the future use of this property, starting on Tuesday, May 29 @ 6:30-9 p.m. at the WATERSIDE INN, 15 Stavebank Road South (map).

TOPCA held a public meeting on March 22, 2011: 'Ramping-up the Port Credit Vision' featuring a presentation by CLC (18p PDF).

PORT CREDIT CULTURAL NODE - EXTENSION TO PILOT PROJECT: 
On March 7, 2012, Council approved an extension to the Cultural Node pilot project (click for updated description on pp12-31) for Port Credit, from April 15 to October 15, 2012 (i.e. during our busy summer period of events and festivals). 

The existing pilot project includes permitting of street furniture and retail displays on the mainstreet sidewalks, relief from parking enforcement on Elmwood Avenue North during the hours of Port Credit’s Farmers Market from June to October, and more bicycle racks along the mainstreet and in our parks.

Q.E.W. CREDIT RIVER BRIDGE REHABILITATION: 

The Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study of the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) Credit River Bridge (project website), initiated by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is to determine a long-term strategy to address the rehabilitation needs of the QEW Credit River Bridge and the future requirements for the QEW from west of Mississauga Road to west of Hurontario Street. 

Rehabilitation of the bridge is a significant infrastructure mega-project in Mississauga, with the potential to improve pedestrian and cycling connectivity.

HANLAN WATER PROJECT:  To support the needs of our growing communities, the Region of Peel has begun the largest and most extensive watermain mega-project Peel has ever designed and constructed – the Hanlan Water Project (project website).  As this multi-year project proceeds throughout the City, the resultant road reconstructions and re-pavings as the watermain excavations are back-filled present the opportunity for new bike lanes and trails.

Excavations are now underway at the very south end of the route, on Lakefront Promenade south of Lakeshore Road.  See the Construction Maps webpage to track the location and progress of the ‘big pipe’ installation, and any current road closures.

PUBLIC ART INSTALLED:  Harold E. Kennedy Park (formerly Lions' Park), 20 Rosewood Avenue (map).   Familia is comprised of nine sculptures in limestone and granite created by artist Stephen Cruise.  According to the artist, the sculptures respond to the significant natural and industrial history of the location.  The nine elements of the artwork include the following: a shell, tree, fish, fox, rail, boat, tank, lion and hive.  A splendid example of public consultation being faithfully realized!
